The Friends of Holland Garden, Wimbledon SW20
Updated 19 November, 2010
The aims of The Friends are:
To promote the maintenance and development of Holland Garden, SW20 (‘The Garden’)
and its amenities for the benefit of the local community.
To require continuing security for The Garden, both day and night.
To act as a point of focus for residents and users of The Garden to represent
their views to the London Borough of Merton and other relevant bodies.
To lobby for further investment and improvement to The Garden.
To provide regular information to the members of The Friends and to the community
surrounding and using The Garden of the activities of The Friends.
One of the principal aims of The Friends is to ensure the security of the Garden, both day & night.
Successive budget cuts have left many of the open spaces in Wimbledon accessible 24 hours a day, with a consequent rise in unruly behaviour, vandalism and graffiti.
A small number of parks, including The Garden have a partnership with the London Borough of Merton to assist in the opening of the park in the summer months. Local residents operate a rota whereby each participant family takes responsibility for unlocking the three gates to the Garden for one or two weeks over the summer. In return, the Council’s Ranger service undertakes to lock the Garden in the evening and eject any recalcitrant youths.
Opening the parks is pleasant 10 minute task and is a direct demonstration of protecting the Garden from further damage. The gate rota for this year is now complete, however if you would like to help out in future years or be a ‘substitute’ should others’ plans change, please e-mail us.
